Murray served in Arvaikheer, Uvurkhangai Province, Mongolia with the Gobi Regional Economic Growth Initiative for 23 months (plus 3 months for training in Erdenet). He taught local herders how to write business and financial plans and apply for loans at one of three local banks. He also was responsible for identifying technical specialists and resources for the agricultural sector through networking with various aid groups within the country.
In addition to his primary assignment, he also taught English at the technical college, arranged for 5,000 lbs of vegetable seed to be donated and distributed to herder groups, wrote several grants to help fund various NGOs, and implemented a successful alfalfa planting project in the Gobi Desert to restore nitrogen to the soil and provide a high nutrient animal feed. Murray is currently the County Executive Director for the USDA Farm Service Agency in Southwestern Washington and lives in Portland with his wife and 14 month old son.
